Today June 12, Department of Conservation are opening bookings for the new Paparoa Track. Two years after track building begun DOC are now confident the track will be opening to walkers and bikers on the 1st of December!
The Paparoa Track is New Zealand’s 10th Great Walk. Purpose built, shared-use for walkers and mountain bikers, the track crosses the alpine tops of the Paparoa Range. Through subtropical rainforest, limestone karst landscapes and overlooking the Tasman Sea and Southern Alps, the Paparoa Track is like no other. The Paparoa Track, along with the Pike 29 Memorial Track is built to remember 29 miners who lost their lives in the 2010 Pike River Mine disaster.
Four track building teams have been working on the track now for two years. Today on the DOC website below is the first opportunity for walkers and riders to book the two brand new huts Moonlight Tops and Pororari. Ces Clark Hut, a pre existing hut on the track has also been added to the Walk and now bookable.
The Team at the Punakaiki Beach Camp are excited to be facilitating walkers on the new Track. Our booking system allows walkers and bikers to instantly book logistics such as Accommodation, Track Transport, Car Parks and Gear Transfers.
We are confident the first season will be very busy for the new Track so make sure to book you hut tickets and logistics soon!
