Paparoa Track Closure

Hi there shuttle and car relocation guests,

Unfortunately we have been made aware from the Department of Conservation that the Paparoa Track from the Pike 29 memorial track turn off to Pororari hut has now been closed until the 21st of December due to a big slip just before Pororari hut.

Obviously this must be quite annoying for those who were really looking forward to getting on the Paparoa in the next few weeks. This email is to give you other options for your trip that you may not have yet considered.

Below are what we believe could still allow you to have an great time here in the Paparoas! We also have our brand new house the “BLACKBALL CONNECTION” reasonably available over the next few weeks for anyone deciding to stay over in the heart of the classic wee town of Blackball.

For all changes please email us at info@punakaikibeachcamp.co.nz as you can imagine we are quite busy re-organising everyone and hope to get back in 24 hours.

Option 1

The Pike 29 Memorial track opened in February in memory of the Pike 29 who lost their lives in the mining disaster just over 10 years ago. This spectacular track has been very popular with hikers and bikers since its opening.

Many of our guests are thinking of changing their Smokeho carpark to Punakaiki Relcations to Smokeho to Pike 29 carpark instead (at the same cost).

Those who are book in for our transport, changing to a car relocation for smokeho carpark to Pike 29 Memorial track carpark is the best option.

You can read all about the Pike 29 track HERE

Option 2

Another option is walking in to the Moonlight and Pororari huts from both ends. Both huts are still open, just the connecting piece of track is currently closed. This option doesn’t require any movement of cars as you car will be in the carpark where you left it.

But do keep in mind cars (none of ours) have been broken into over the past year, but we can pick them up and store them in our shed in Blackball if needed for a nightly fee.

Option 3

If you really want to save the Paparoa for the full experience we are more than happy to cancel your booking, refund or just save booking credit for another date. Please email or call our team on 03 7311894 or info@punakaikibeachcamp.co.nz
